Meanwhile, your stress levels spike. The research team looked at how commuting affected the wellbeing of more than 26,000 people working in England between 2009-2010 and 2014-2015, and the findings are based on data from other research called Understanding Society.Heres what you need to know about how your com mute could be affecting your lifeA long commute is a downer, with a few notable exceptionsIn what will not come as news to anyone who has a long or unpleasant commute, the researchers found that longer journeys to work have adverse subjective wellbeing effects, particularly through loss of free time.Yet, researchers found, a frustrating commute isnt necessarily a death sentence for your happiness - particularly if you accepted the longer commute knowing that it welches for a job you enjoy or are well compensated for.In addition, if everyone else has a similar commute, you may accept it as normal, researchers found. The acceptance of lengthier commutes being an unavoidable part may only be retained if the commute is considered unavoidable and a social norm, researchers found.Active commuters are happier than passive onesTaking certain differences between people into account, people who bike to their job have higher self-reported health than those who are stuck behind the wheel of a ca r or in a seat on a bus, researchers found.People who take the train and drive to work were more stressed out than those who take the bus, researchers found. But the simple shift of mode of transport to something more active like biking - or walking - led to more enjoyment of free time and ones job and less stress, researchers found. What employers can doEmployers, take note the study found thattheres greater job satisfaction when employees work from home, which is one surefire way to give them shorter commute times.Having a quicker commute also ups the chances of an employee remaining at their company.

Sure-fire ways to increase your confidence at work

Sure-fire ways to increase your confidence at workSure-fire ways to increase your confidence at workWe all know that starting a new job can often be overwhelming, particularly for those starting a first job straight out of school or university where there is added pressure to make a positive first impression.Remembering names, getting used to your commute and adapting to the office culture is bound to be a challenge. It can often be tricky as one of the youngest and least experienced members of your team to build your confidence, however its important to remember that your employer has hired you because of the skills you demonstrated in your interview.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraOften having confidence in your decisions and the assertiveness to complete tasks is what makes a successful employee. Once you meet with your first successes, confidence will come naturally in the mea ntime however there are a few simple top tips you can follow which will help you build your confidence in a new environment. As Principal ofQuest Professional a business school dedicated to equipping A-level and university leavers with the skills they need to succeed in the world of work we spoke with Claire Granados who is used to preparing students with the practical skills they need to succeed when beginning their careers. Here Claire tellsYCBhow new employees can build their confidence through a number of simple and practical techniques1. Prepare to be confidentTaking the time to make a plan and be prepared for any situation that requires you at your fruchtwein confident is really worthwhile and impactful. So ensure you plan in advance of any important events Arrive on time, wear the outfit that makes you feel great and prepare your material even if youre certain you know the subject well Whatever it is that best triggers your personal confidence, recognise it and plan and prepa re on this basis.2. Know your stuffPlanning is an important confidence booster but nothing substitutes for that feeling of really knowing your stuff. So seize every chance to boost your expertise so that you can confidently share your insights, experience and know-how.3. Dont let fear stop youOf course, no one sets out to fail, but its important to recognise failure for what it is a momentary set back and (crucially) an experience to learn from then adapt around. Keep in mind that some of the best entrepreneurs and corporate leaders have had serious failures and setbacks along the way.4. Adopt a positive attitudePositivity is magnetic and can have a profound impact on ourselves and others, so its equally important to allow yourself to be drawn to other positive people. Where possible, identifying a role model who inspires you and encourages you to confront challenges will help you to bridge your confidence gap.5. Be assertiveKnow what you believe in, want to achieve and are prepar ed to work hard for. This naturally gets easier as your confidence develops but the more you step forward and raise your hand, the bolder you will feel about that next promotion, start-up or career adventure.6. SmilePeople with confidence tend to smile more but its a learned skill. You can get used to it by adapting your behaviour around the office, greeting others and asking about their day. Not only will this help you project confidence, youll probably find it changes your own attitude and gives you a more positive outlook something which is highly contagious. Confidence is reflected, so by appearing confident yourself youll find that your team will not only believe in your abilities but will feel more optimistic themselves. This article originally appeared on Your Coffee Break. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

12 lessons you learn or end up regretting forever

12 lessons you learn or end up regretting forever12 lessons you learn or end up regretting foreverSticking your neck out and taking charge of your career is no trivial matter. Whether thats switching careers, going back to school, or walking away from a j-o-b to start your own business, it takes a lot of guts. But guts will only get you so far. Once you build up the nerve and make the leap, youre no mora than 5% of the way there. You still have to succeed in your new endeavor, and trying to succeed is when your worst fears (the ones that made you hesitate in the first place) will come true.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraIm going to assume youre like me and dont have a brilliant mentor, a rich uncle, or some other person who is going to show you the ropes and explain each step you need to take to take charge of your career. You see, its been almost 20 years since I last had a boss . I went from working in a surf shop to striking out on my own, eventually startingTalentSmart(with a partner) before Id finished grad school. When I set out on my own, I had all the gumption and appetite for risk that I needed to take charge of my career. At the time I thought that was all I needed to succeed. It wasnt. I also needed guidance. Without it, I learned some difficult (and often painful) lessons along the way.Id like to share some of my biggest lessons learned with you so that they can help you as you take charge of your career (in whatever form that takes). As I look back on behauptung lessons, I realize that theyre really great reminders for us all.1. Confidence must come firstSuccessful people often exude confidence - its obvious that they believe in themselves and what theyre doing. It isnt their success that makes them confident, however. The confidence was there first.Think about itDoubt breeds doubt. Why would anyone believe in you, your ideas, or your abilities if you didnt believe in them yourself? It takes confidence to reach for new challenges.People who are fearful or insecure tend to stay within their comfort zones. But comfort zones rarely expand on their own. Thats why people who lack confidence get stuck in dead-end jobs and let valuable opportunities pass them by.Unconfident people often feel at the mercy of external circumstances.Successful people arent deterred by obstacles, which is how they rise up in the first place.Confidence is a crucial building block in a successful career, and embracing it fully will take you places you never thought possible. No one is stopping you from what you want to accomplish but yourself. Its time to remove any barriers created by self-doubt.2. Youre living the life that youve createdYou are not a victim of circumstance. No one can force you to make decisions and take actions that andrang contrary to your values and aspirations. The circumstances youre living in today are your own - you created them .Likewise, your future is entirely up to you. If youre feeling stuck, its probably because youre afraid to take the risks necessary to achieve your goals and live your dreams. When its time to take action, remember that its always better to be at the bottom of the ladder you want to climb than at the top of one you dont.3. Being busy does not equal being productiveLook at everyone around you. They all seem so busy - running from meeting to meeting and firing off emails. Yet how many of them are really producing, really succeeding at a high level?Success doesnt come from movement and activity. It comes from focus - from ensuring that your time is used efficiently and productively. You get the same number of hours in the day as everyone else. Use yours wisely. After all, youre the product of your output, not your effort. Make certain your efforts are dedicated to tasks that get results.4. Youre only as good as those you associate withYou should strive to surround yourself with people who inspire you, people who make you want to be better. And you probably do. But what about the people who drag you down? Why do you allow them to be a part of your life?Anyone who makes you feel worthless, anxious, or uninspired is wasting your time and, quite possibly, making you mora like them. Life is too short to associate with people like this. Cut them loose.5. Squash your negative self-talkWhen youre taking charge of your career, you wont always have a cheerleader in your corner. This magnifies the effects of self-doubt. The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that - thoughts, not facts. When you find yourself believing the negative and pessimistic things your inner voice says, its time to stop and write them down. Literally stop what youre doing and write down what youre thinking.Once youve taken a moment to slow down the negative momentum of your thoughts, you will be more rational and clear-headed i n evaluating their veracity.6. Avoid asking What if?What if? statements throw fuel on the fire of stress and worry, which are detrimental to reaching your goals. Things can go in a million different directions, and the more time you spend worrying about the possibilities, the less time youll spend taking action and staying productive. Asking what if? will only take you to a place you dont want - or need - to go. Of course, scenario planning is a necessary and effective planning technique. The key distinction here is to recognize the difference between worry and strategic thinking about your future.7. Schedule exercise and sleepI cant say enough about the importance of quality sleep. When you sleep your brain removes toxic proteins from its neurons that are by-products of neural activity when youre awake. Unfortunately, your brain can remove them adequately only while youre asleep. So when you dont get enough sleep, the toxic proteins remain in your brain cells, wreaking havoc by im pairing your ability to think - something no amount of caffeine can fix.Your self-control, attention, and memory are all reduced when you dont get enough - or the right kind - of sleep. Sleep deprivation raises stress hormone levels on its own, even without a stressor present, which are a major productivity killer.Ambition often makes you feel as if you must sacrifice sleep to stay productive, but sleep deprivation diminishes your productivity so much throughout the day that youre better off sleeping.A study conducted at the Eastern Ontario Research Institute found that people who exercised twice a week for 10 weeks felt more competent socially, academically, and athletically. They also rated their body image and self-esteem higher.Best of all, rather than the physical changes in their bodies being responsible for the uptick in confidence, it was the immediate, endorphin-fueled positivity from exercise that made all the difference. Schedule your exercise to make certain it happen s, or the days will just slip away.8. Seek out small victoriesSmall victories can seem unimportant when youre really after something big, but small victories build new androgen receptors in the areas of the brain responsible for reward and motivation. This increase in androgen receptors increases the influence of testosterone, which further increases your confidence and your eagerness to tackle future challenges. When you have a series of small victories, the boost in your confidence can last for months.9. Dont say yes unless you really want toResearch conducted at the University of California in Berkeley shows that the more difficulty that you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress, burnout, and even depression, all of which make it difficult to take charge of your career.Saying no is indeed a major challenge for many people. No is a powerful word that you should not be afraid to wield. When its time to say no, avoid phrases like I dont think I can or Im not cer tain. Saying no to a new commitment honors your existing commitments and gives you the opportunity to successfully fulfill them.10. Dont seek perfectionDont set perfection as your target. It doesnt exist. Human beings, by our very nature, are fallible. When perfection is your goal, youre always left with a nagging sense of failure that makes you want to give up or reduce your effort. You end up spending your time lamenting what you failed to accomplish and what you should have done differently instead of moving forward excited about what youve achieved and what you will accomplish in the future.11. Focus on solutionsWhere you focus your attention determines your emotional state. When you fixate on the problems that youre facing, you create and prolong negative emotions which hinder your ability to reach your goals. When you focus on the actions youll take to better yourself and your circumstances, you create a sense of personal efficacy that produces positive emotions and improves per formance.12. Forgive yourselfWhen you slip up, it is critical that you forgive yourself and move on. Dont ignore how the mistake makes you feel just dont wallow in it. Instead, shift your attention to what youre going to do to improve yourself in the future.Failure can erode your self-confidence and make it hard to believe youll achieve a better outcome in the future. Most of the time, failure results from taking risks and trying to achieve something that isnt easy.Success lies in your ability to rise in the face of failure, and you cant do this when youre living in the past. Anything worth achieving is going to require you to take some risks, and you cant allow failure to stop you from believing in your ability to succeed. When you live in the past, that is exactly what happens, and your past becomes your present, preventing you from moving forward.Bringing it all togetherI hope these lessons are as useful to you as they have been to me over the years. As I write them, Im reminded o f their power and my desire to use them every day.Travis Bradberry is the coauthor of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 and the cofounder of TalentSmart. This article originally appeared onLinkedIn.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Phone Interview Tips to Stay Calm and Speak Confidently

Phone Interview Tips to Stay Calm and Speak Confidently Phone Interview Tips to Stay Calm and Speak Confidently Interviews over the phone can be just as daunting as meeting face-to-face. Theyre often short, so you feel pressured to make the most of the time. You cant see your interviewers body language or facial expressions, which makes it harder to build rapport and gauge receptivity. And that reduced nonverbal communication can lead to interruptions or awkward silences. It sounds like a recipe for disaster, but like any part of the job seeking process, you have mora control than you think. A little preparation goes a long way toward helping you feel and sound calm and confident in your upcoming phone interview. Surprisingly, your nonverbal communication still plays an important role in phone interviews- your body language and breathing determine your voice tone. There are physical things you can do to keep your nerves under control and convey credibility. Below, I share a few sugge stions for preparing in advance, then some phone interview tips for once the call begins. How to Prepare for Phone Interview 1. Make good posture a habit On the phone, an interviewer wont be able to see your posture, but theyll sense it through the sound of your voice. In addition, good posture helps you breathe better, which makes you feel calmer and sound confident. But when youre in the thick of answering difficult questions, posture is the last thing on your mind If you want access to the power and credibility good postures brings during your phone interview, you need to make standing (or sitting) up straight a habit. Set reminders during the day to check in and correct how youre holding yourself. Find hacks that force you to use good posture for example, one person I worked with adjusted the rearview mirror in his car so that he could only see out of it if he was sitting up straight. Take a minute or two every day while youre job hunting to practice good posture during mock int erviews. The more comfortable you are with good nonverbal skills, the more naturally they will come to you when you need them. 2. Create a Story Answer Bank Some companies give out interview questions in advance so that candidates can prepare answers. But even when thats not the case, there are zillions of online resources that will provide you with possible interview questions and suggestions for answering them. Take the time to think of answers in advance. RelatedHow to Answer the Tell Me About Yourself Interview QuestionHow to Answer What Are Your Salary Expectations?10 Common Behavioral Interview Questions and AnswersIn addition, come up with half a dozen or so stories from your past employment that illustrate things like challenges overcome, innovation and creativity, conflict resolution, etc. fruchtwein people find it hard to sift through their work experience on the spot to come up with a relevant example in a phone interview. You will feel calm and confident knowing you hav e a bank of stories to draw from when needed. 3. Practice out loudYes, OUT LOUD. Introduce yourself, tell some stories, and answer some questions out loud before youre on the phone. If you feel weird talking to yourself (unlike me), find a friend who will roleplay with you and pepper you with questions. When you say things out loud, you get to know your content better. Youre involving more of your body (vocal chords, for example) and senses (you can hear yourself), which utilizes more of your brain. Also, youd be astonished at how unfamiliar your own thoughts sound when youre hearing them come out of your mouth for the first time. What makes sense in your head doesnt always sound as good spoken. Your answers will be much more fluid and accessible to you in the interview if youve said them out loud before. As a presenter, the one part of a speech or workshop that I rehearse the most is the opening two minutes. Youd think that introducing myself and my content would be the easiest part But it takes awhile to get into a rhythm and I dont want my first few sentences to be a mess of verbal stumblings. Neither do you. Practice introducing yourself. Out loud. Its also important to rehearse your stories. When I first started preparing presentations, Id say to myself, At this point, Ill tell the story about the lady who stole my chickens, and then Id mangle it in the actual delivery. In the heat of the moment, its easy to add irrelevant details, get it out of order, or miss the point entirely. Stories only make an impact when theyre well told. Practice your stories. Out loud. 4. Set the stageOn the day of your phone interview, create an atmosphere that will help you. Dress as you would for an in-person interview. You might be tempted to show up in jammies, since the interviewer wont see you. But suitable clothing gets you in the right mindset and helps you feel more confident. If possible, find a private space for the interview where you can stand. This will help you wi th the posture and breathing mentioned before. Using a headset will also improve your posture and allow you the use of your hands. Movement and gestures can often help get the right words flowing. Whatever you choose to do, you know yourself best. Choose an environment that will contribute to calm confidence. Okay its showtime Now youre on the phone. Here are some nonverbal communication tips that will help you stay calm and sound confident. As with the posture, practicing them beforehand helps. Nonverbal Phone Interview Tips1. Feel your feetThis is a trick I use when Im nervous to stay grounded. Feel the floor supporting you. This also brings awareness to your whole body, which calms you down. Getting in touch with your physical senses reduces anxiety. When youre aware of your feet and feeling grounded, you almost cant help but have good posture That stability will lead to fewer nervous tics- rocking back and forth, drumming fingers, fiddling with things, tapping feet- which can af fect the sound of your voice. 2. Keep your hands freeAvoid folding your arms, clasping your hands, or putting your hands in your pockets. I know, I know no one can see you But when you lock down your hands you lock down your thoughts. You will think more freely and sound more confident if your hands are available to move. 3. Pause before answering questionsDont be afraid of silence. You will sound better if you take a second to breathe and think. Come up with a few phrases you can use to acknowledge the question before you pause and breathe. Great question let me think about that or Hmmm that sparks several thoughts or Im going to consider that for a second, with a short pause buys you time. We worry about filling every second with words, but it takes confidence to be silent and it makes you sound smarter. Communicate confidence by giving yourself a moments pause before answering. You now have many tools at your disposal to make phone interviews go more smoothly. You dont need to tr y them all or do them perfectly. Choose a few to practice, the ones that feel accessible and you know would make the biggest impact. Related Ask Recruiters How to Nail Your Email Responses and Phone InterviewPrepare, practice, and then let go. Trust yourself. Trust the work youve done. Trust that youll have what you need when the time comes. Your phone interview will not be perfect, but perfection isnt the goal. The goal is to stay calm, sound confident, and present the best version of yourself. With these tips, you can now do that Rachel Beohmhas worked for over ten years in the communications field.
